Story 01 · Food-service production

A working label machine, stranded by old software.

In a food-service production environment, an important label printer still worked, but its XP-era design software kept the workflow tied to aging Windows XP and Windows 7 computers.

Situation

Useful production equipment depended on computers that were becoming a continuity risk.

Change

The essential label-design workflow was reimplemented for Windows 11 around the machine the team already used.

Result

The equipment stayed in service, the daily workflow gained a supported path, and a disproportionate monthly subscription was avoided.

Story 02 · Laboratory workflow

Less plate-map retyping. More usable instrument data.

In a surface plasmon resonance laboratory workflow, plate information from one system had to be recreated for instrument setup, while result files required extra work before they could support repeatable analysis.

Situation

Manual setup and transcription added time and created avoidable opportunities for mismatch.

Change

Authorized conversion and analysis steps were built around the laboratory's own plate information and result data.

Result

The workflow reduced repetitive setup and made data easier to reuse without replacing functioning scientific equipment.

Story 03 · Software preservation

A 2002 game engine, rebuilt for modern platforms.

JN Engine is a clean-room reimplementation of the Open Media Toolkit 2.0 engine used by Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2002), using measured output from the original Direct3D 7 runtime as the reference.

Situation

An aging graphics runtime was bound to an obsolete operating environment and rendering stack.

Change

Capture, replay, format comparison, and repeatable tests guide an independently rebuilt C codebase.

Result

The same project targets native Linux, 64-bit Windows, and the browser while preserving observable behavior.

Story 04 · Format recovery

Data locked in a file format only one program could read.

A 2002 game's character models, skeletons, and animations lived in 674 files of a proprietary, undocumented binary format with no public parser — readable only by a vendor library that cannot be redistributed and runs only on 32-bit Windows.

Situation

Useful data was sealed inside an undocumented format whose only reader was tied to an obsolete platform.

Change

The structure was recovered by measuring the files themselves, validated against every shipped file of two games, and released as a specification with a one-file parser anyone can use.

Result

All 1,063 files of both games read — meshes, skeletons, skinning, animations — and every model now plays in a live browser viewer, converted by the published tools.
